UNITORQ electromagnetic DC clutch and brake combinations are designed for applications requiring intermittent operation and incorporate both UFB (normally OFF brakes) and UFC (normally OFF clutches). The system operates on DC voltage and does not require slip rings, making it virtually maintenance-free throughout its service life. It features easy air gap adjustment without dismantling the unit, a robust and compact UCBE-type design, a totally enclosed construction for enhanced protection, and a split shaft arrangement for ease of installation and operation.

Working

In normal condition, the drive is isolated from the driven load and rotates freely. Once power is supplied to the clutch coil, the armature shifts from the brake stator across the air gap towards the clutch coil and clamps with the clutch rotor. It then acts as a single unit, allowing torque to be transmitted from the drive to the driven load without backlash. Similarly, when power is withdrawn from the clutch coil and supplied to the brake coil, a strong magnetic field forces the armature plate to slide back towards the brake stator, resulting in braking action.

In cases where the armature has pre-stressed springs, switching off the power supply to the clutch/brake coils causes the springs to pull back the armatures. In both conditions, the predetermined air gap plays a crucial role.

Note

UCB-E design combinations can be supplied with AC/DC motors and suitable helical or worm gearboxes. Clutch brake controllers or separate fast excitation units can also be provided.
